On October 10, 2006, an executive commitee for Adopt A Cop of Virginia was formed. The committee will serve as the Directors of the program and will promote and give guidance to it's representatives throughout the State of Virginia. The committe is comprised of several persons representing law enforcement, business leaders, vehicle hobbyists and from colleges with criminal training, etc.

This program is about more than just money. It is about caring enough to make a difference.

Adopt A Cop VA
Welcomes New Directors

Captain Steven Neal has law experience that has already proved to be invalueable since joining the Board of Directors for the Adopt A Cop program. Captain Neal, with his twenty-five years of law enforcement experience, will take this all volunteer organization to the next level. Although this program was started in Chesterfield County, it is now expanding throughout the Commonwealth.

Captain Neal’s exceptional skills, knowledge, and professionalism was crucial not only to this expansion, but to it's continued success.

All concerned citizens involved with this program welcome Captain Neal. With his assistance, we foresee this program being able to help more and more of our law enforcement personnel and their families whenever the call goes out “Officer Needs Assistance”.

We wish to thank Captain Neal for once again going over and beyond the call of duty to assist his fellow officers, not only within the county of Chesterfield but throughout the Commonwealth. Anyone knowing Captain Neal personally would expect no less of him.

We also recognize the contributions of Harold D. Hartel, President of the Virginia Peninsular Car Club Council (VPCCC), and Captain Dave Arnold, Virginia Peninsular Regional Jail & Coordinator for the Adopt A Cop Program for the VPCCC. Everyone that knows either of them only speaks with highest of respect. We have known & worked with both for several years and can't say enough about their concern for law enforcement officers in Virginia and the citizens that live in all the communities throughout. They both are dedicated and believe in the Adopt A Cop Program and what it has already accomplished to date. They have aleady provided us with their expertise. Also, Rebecca Irving, Junior Auxiliary Member. Rebecca Came to the first AAC event and was hooked. She said she just wanted to help our Officers and was willing to help us make everything happen. And she is a worker!

This program was born as a result of the two officers in Chesterfield County that were involved in a shooting with one being killed. The Southern Knights Cruisers sponsored a night of donations to help the ones injured and the family of the one killed. This sparked a bonding with the Chesterfield County Police Department. The Southern Knights Cruisers are currently working with Sgt. Layne Hellerstedt of the Chesterfield County Police Department and will continue to do so for the good of the officers and the community.

Now, as an extension of those first efforts, Adopt A Cop of Virginia was formed at the request of the Southern Knights Cruisers. This program is now expanding and interest is growing throughout Virginia.

More Good News! We like to Welcome the Hampton Roads Car Club Council as a Regional Member of AAC. Dee Nienstedt, President of HRCCC, says, "We are talking to law enforcement in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area and everyone is ready to go to work to make a difference in the community." We have known Dee for several years and know she is serious when it comes to helping the community.

    Program Information

    It's Purpose:
The Adopt A Cop of Virginia is a new organization formed to be a central guidance source for the "Adopt A Cop" Program for Virginia.

This Monthly Newsletter will be posted around the first of each month. It will be a central source for all the public to access to locate events or find out who to contact if they want to be a sponsor of the program or just want to help. It is compiled from information supplied by the local police departments and regional or area representatives. It will also contain information as to scams and alerts.

    It's Mission:
This organization will lead in the effort to bring attention to the need to give our Officers in law enforcement the support they so deserve.

By working with car clubs, other clubs, community organizations and businesses, as sponsors of the program, it is the intent to promote community involvement to show our Officers:

    (1) That they are appreciated and
    (2) We stand behind them.

Only with a 100% community effort will it be completely successful.

    How will it work?
The "Adopt A Cop of Virginia" program includes:

  • Provide guidance to orgainizations wishing to be a Regional Representative in Virginia

  • Provide guidance to Regional Representatives working with Clubs or Organizations working directly with their local Police Department

    Further by:
  • Energizing members of such club or organization; the members, their coworkers, friends, family, churches, communities, etc. to help with execution.

      1) Ex: Officers injured - Get names and addresses so everyone can drop them a note, card, etc. Help lift their spirits.

      2) They need all the prayers and other help they can get at this time.

      3) They are more than often taken for granted by the public, as we know. So show them they aren't alone. That you are there to help them.

  • Provide information and help, when possible, by working directly with the local police department. Most have a fund established to pay for short term help for officers or their families, in case of an emergency, until other help can be arranged and provided. Also, it can be used to help with other officer and/or community law enforcement programs that the department might be involved with.

    Result:
Now, that the call is out: "Officer(s) Needing Assistance". We as cruisers, business owners, and members of the community will answer that call to tell them they are appreciated and to say "Thank You."

    Who Wins?
The Officers will feel better about their work and the community where they work. This means that everyone is a Winner!

  • February 6 Update! - State Police Trooper K S Chapman was injured on Saturday, Feb 2, 2008, in Smyth County when he was hit by man driving a pickup on Rt. I-81. The driver was charged with a DUI. The driver was then arrested the following day for DUI and drug possession. With people like this on our highways, our officers need a tank to protect them. There are just too many cases like this and our representatives need to past laws that remove them from our roads and our court systems need to back our law enforcement to make sure it happens.

Our prayers are with Trooper Chapman in hopes that he will make a full recovery. ***** Update as of February 5 ***** Yesterday (Feb 5), State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy said anyone wishing to help the family by contributing to the Trooper Kris Chapman Relief Fund. Make your checks to: The Trooper Kris Chapman Relief Fund and mail your card or note with the check to: Bank of Marion Chilhowie Branch, P.O. • Officer Donna Boswell - U. S. Capitol Police - This Officer located in Northern Virginia needs our help. Someone hit her car from behind and she and her family are struggling day by day to just get through. She really needs community help and of course money to help pay some of the bill. She was just brought to our attention by a Becky Wright, a local Journalist in Chesterfield County.

This is the full report: The U.S. Capitol Police Department is accepting donations to help Officer Donna Boswell recover from a car crash earlier this month. Boswell's car was hit from behind while she was driving on Interstate 95. The impact of the crash broke Boswell's neck, shattering a vertebra and leaving her with no feeling in her hands, fingers, legs or toes. Boswell's insurance will only pay for 60 days of rehabilitation, according to Boswell's husband. After that, Boswell and her family will have to cover the bills. To make a donation, contact the following: House Division of the Capitol Police: 202-225-0400 or the Senate Division: 202-224-4841 or the Capitol Division: 202-224-2985. • Up-date!!! - Officer Chris Hurley, of Australia was in another situation. He was attacked by several locals in a somewhat bad neighbor and ended up killing a man to save himself. Now, he was charged with "Death in Custody" and attacked by the neighborhood and the media wanted his skin for undue force. Hey, what was wrong with this picture? If an Officers says to stop, then you should stop. If not, he should have the right to apprehend & defend himself doing so, however he feels warranted. WELL, we are happy to report that Officer Hurley was cleared of any wrong doing. Thank God! If anyone would like send him a card, please contact Union Representative Denis Fitzpatrick, P.O. Box 13008 George St., Brisbane 4004, QLD. Australia.

  • Another Officer in Australia was just recently attacked and beat to within an inch of his life. He lost one of his eyes and will be in the hospital for sometime according to reports we received from Officers in Australia. He likely will no longer be able to work.

Like Officer Hurley, they do whatever it takes in order to survive. Some of these criminals are out to kill for no reason, because they don't respect anyone as they are plain mean!

Officers are threatened all the time. Some are just run over while doing traffic stops. Some living within our society has stooped to an all time low. Officers can't depend on the law to protect them after something like this happens, then why should want to be in law enforcement or even try to do their jobs, protecting us. Yes, it's a fact that 95-98 % of our citizen's abide by the law. It's the one's that don't that are causing the problems. We need to unite our citizen's in all communities, counties, cities, states and throughout the US to take back our streets. Put the bad guys behind bars or just plain out of sight. If they are placed in jail, we need to make sure they are given a change to change, but that they pay their way. We need to make sure they learn that this isn't the place to be and that don't want to come back.

Without changes, Why in the future would our men & women even want to be in law enforcement? We as law abiding citizens need to support or Officers! We can demand that our laws and courts protect the rights of our Good Officers.

Thanks for reading our Newsletter and we especially thank you for your interest & help with this important program.
